Creating Cosy Spaces for Creativity

For me, cosiness means a safe space — a little haven where I can create freely. It doesn’t need to be perfect or fancy, but it does need to feel right. Here are some of the ways I create a space that helps me settle in and let the creativity flow.

Why Cosy Matters

My environment has such a huge impact on my mindset and creativity. If my space feels unsettled, I struggle to find the flow. But a few small touches can completely shift the energy. Sometimes all it takes is a candle and a warm drink to help me settle down and start, without the overwhelm that can creep in with bigger projects.

Elements of a Cosy Creative Space

For me, it’s all about warm lighting, soft textures, and having different seating options to suit my mood. Scent plays a big role too. A lemon, mint, and eucalyptus wax melt wakes me up and makes me feel fresh and inspired, while my crackling cinnamon chai candle wraps me in calm — the soft crackle from the wooden wick even reminds me of sitting by an open fire.

Of course, Cif is usually close by, either curled up on my painting chair, at my feet, or perched behind me on the sofa. His presence always makes the space feel more complete.

And then there’s sound. Most of the time I listen to audiobooks or podcasts while I work, but every so often I love the ritual of putting on a vinyl record. Those little sensory choices all help shape the atmosphere I need in the moment.

Make It Personal and Flexible

Some of my cosiest creative tools are tied to nostalgia or sensory feedback. For example, I love writing on my bluetooth typewriter keyboard — the click-clack sound somehow helps the words flow, and it takes me back to childhood.

My favourite time to create is in the early hours as the sun rises and the world is still. But there are days, like today, when I need more rest, so I adapt. I’ve learned that cosy spaces can be created anywhere with small rituals, playlists, or even pocket-sized companions — like my little “positive potato” that travels with me.

Cosy Doesn’t Need to Be Fancy

It’s easy to be drawn in by the beautiful, aesthetic creative spaces we see online. I enjoy looking at them too, but a cosy space doesn’t have to look like that. My studio is built from pieces I’ve collected over the years or crafted myself, and that feels just right for me.

Cosy, at its heart, is a feeling — not a look. And it will look different for each of us, depending on what we need at the time. What matters most is that it feels like a safe, welcoming haven for whoever is using it.
