Small Moments, Big Shifts: How Everyday Creativity Grounds Us
A huge part of caring for my wellbeing is having small creative rituals I can return to each day. These look different depending on the day—sometimes it’s baking a batch of cakes, doodling while I wait for the kettle to boil, or choosing a new wax melt to fill my studio with comforting scent. (My current favourite is lemon, mint and eucalyptus.) These tiny acts might seem simple, but they help shift my mood and keep me grounded. As someone who struggles with phone anxiety, I can highly recommend doodling during calls!
Creativity doesn’t have to be big or perfect. Rearranging your desk, picking your outfit, popping flowers into a vase, or even scribbling in the margins can become powerful acts of presence. They’re quiet moments of calm you can carve out—especially when paired with a candle and a good brew.
As someone living with multiple chronic illnesses, neurodivergence, and mental health challenges, what my creativity looks like changes from day to day. Some days, I knit a few rows on a pair of socks. Other days, I colour—sometimes digitally, when holding a pencil feels too hard. My body and brain don’t always cooperate, but creativity is something I can always come back to in one form or another.
Taking a moment to reflect on the role creativity plays in your life can be a lovely way to reconnect with yourself. Ask: What lifts me up when I need a gentle shift? If you struggle to think of something in the moment, an “ideas jar” can be really helpful—I shared more about that over on Instagram if you’d like to try it for yourself.
